Dallas Center is one of the few towns in the metro that still pumps and treats every drop of its own water. That changes what is in your glass, and it changes what a filter needs to do.

Dallas Center Water Supply (public water supply ID 2520098, serving roughly 1,901 people) is classified by the Iowa DNR as a Ground Water system. It buys nothing. It draws from four active alluvial wells, treats the water at a city-owned iron removal and softening plant that was upgraded in December 2021, and pipes it out. Dallas Center is not a member of Central Iowa Water Works, the regional production authority that supplies Ankeny, Clive, Grimes, Johnston, Norwalk, Polk City, Urbandale, Waukee and West Des Moines from the Raccoon and Des Moines rivers. Different source, different plant, different numbers.
Well 7 sits at 56.5 feet and was drilled in 1985. Well 9 is 49 feet, from 1997. Well 10 is 48 feet, from 2004. Well 11, the newest, is 56 feet and went in during 2020. The city's own water quality report labels its distribution sampling point "WLS 7, 9, 10, 11 AFTR GNDN STORAGE." For comparison, some metro systems pull from Jordan aquifer wells more than 2,400 feet down.
Both the 2023 and 2024 reports carry the same Iowa DNR source water assessment language, word for word: the Alluvial wells "will be highly susceptible to surface contaminants such as leaking underground storage tanks, contaminant spills, and excess fertilizer application." That is not a violation notice. It is a statement about how little rock and clay sits between Dallas County farm ground and the water Dallas Center pumps.

Dallas Center's water met every federal standard. We are not going to pretend otherwise, and if you came here expecting us to find a crisis in this report, there is not one. Trihalomethanes came in at 0.053 against a limit of 80, which is essentially nothing, and a world away from the 70 that river-fed Urbandale reported. That is what pumping groundwater instead of river water does to disinfection byproducts. The 90th-percentile lead result was 0.00, which is genuinely good news and not something every small town can say.
Nitrate is the one everybody in Dallas County asks about, and the honest answer is that Dallas Center's number is low. The 2025 report puts it at 0.3734 mg/L against a limit of 10. So the town is not fighting a nitrate problem today. What the DNR is flagging is that wells 48 to 56 feet deep in an alluvial aquifer surrounded by row crop ground have a short, fast path from the surface, and that path does not care what last year's sample said.
Two things in the record are worth knowing. First, sodium at 235 mg/L in the wellhead sample. No federal standard exists for sodium in drinking water, so this is not a compliance issue, but if someone in your house is on a sodium-restricted diet it is a fair thing to ask your doctor about. Second, the 2023 report discloses a monitoring lapse in the utility's own words: "In October 2023 we failed to monitor for Coliform Bacteria. Adverse health effects, if any, are not known. Monitoring procedures have been corrected." No contaminant was found. A required test was missed and then fixed. That is what running a water system for 1,901 people with a small public works staff looks like, and it is worth understanding rather than being alarmed by.
One gap we will name: the report states that a lead service line inventory was completed, but it does not publish the results in the report itself. If you live in one of Dallas Center's older homes near the original town grid, that inventory is a reasonable thing to call the city about.
This is the single biggest practical difference between Dallas Center and the rest of the metro, and almost nobody explains it.
In June 2025 Central Iowa Water Works issued the first Stage III ban in the region's history, stopping all residential and commercial lawn watering. Nitrate in the Raccoon River hit 14.39 mg/L. It happened again on June 8, 2026, with the utility stating the regional system was "operating at the limits of its available treatment resources." Ankeny, Clive, Grimes, Johnston, Norwalk, Polk City, Urbandale, Waukee and West Des Moines were all named.

Those restrictions had nothing to do with this town, because this town is not on that river. If a neighbor in Waukee or Grimes told you the tap water was in trouble, they were describing a system Dallas Center is not connected to. Your water comes from four wells inside your own city limits.

It also means there is no 600,000-customer utility with a dedicated nitrate removal facility standing behind your tap. Dallas Center's protection is four shallow wells, one city plant and one public works department. Iowa has the second-highest cancer incidence rate in the country and the fastest growing, and researchers have connected long-term nitrate exposure in drinking water to several of those cancers, which is exactly why the DNR bothers to rate this aquifer as highly susceptible even in a year when the numbers look fine. Dallas Center went from 1,623 people in the 2010 Census to 1,901 in 2020, a 17.1% gain in a decade. The most recent American Community Survey five-year estimate puts the town at about 2,161. It is inside the Des Moines and West Des Moines metropolitan statistical area but keeps its own utility, which is an unusual combination this close to the metro.
The 2020 Census counted 755 housing units in Dallas Center, 721 of them occupied. The latest ACS estimate is roughly 969 units. That is a small enough town that a single sampled house can move a citywide 90th percentile number, which is one reason we test your actual kitchen tap instead of quoting you a city average.
Owner occupancy in Dallas Center is reported at roughly 83%, well above the national rate near 65%, with a median household income around $95,854. That matters practically. An under-sink RO system is a permanent improvement to the house, and it makes the most sense when you are the one staying in it.
