A new house in Waukee does not mean new water. Here is where the water actually comes from, what the latest testing found, and what an under-sink system changes.
Fast growth built the subdivisions. It did not build a treatment plant. Waukee buys finished water from the same regional system that supplies Des Moines.
Waukee Water Supply (public water supply ID 2573080, serving roughly 31,823 people) operates the pipes, the LP Moon storage tank and the meters. It does not operate a treatment plant. The Iowa DNR classifies Waukee's source water type as "Purchased Surface Water", and the city's own water quality page confirms it buys treated water from Des Moines Water Works. Waukee is one of the twelve founding members of Central Iowa Water Works, the regional production authority established in 2024, with Des Moines Water Works operating the plants under contract.
The 2026 water quality report names Waukee directly as a community served by the McMullen plant. It treats up to 25 million gallons a day drawn from six radial collector wells and one horizontal well set in the coarse sand and gravel beneath the Raccoon River, with Maffitt Reservoir and Crystal Lake available for blending. Those collector wells sit in riverbed gravel, so even the "well" half of the supply is filtered river water, not a deep protected aquifer.
Waukee does keep a single active well on the DNR's records, drilled 2,730 feet into the Cambrian-Ordovician aquifer. The DNR rates that deep aquifer as low susceptibility to surface contamination, which is exactly why a city keeps one. It is a backup, not the primary supply. Day to day, what comes out of a Waukee kitchen tap is purchased CIWW surface water.
The Iowa DNR source water assessment for Waukee rates the Raccoon River, the Des Moines River, Crystal Lake and Maffitt Reservoir all at "High" susceptibility, and the alluvial aquifer feeding those collector wells as "highly susceptible."

Waukee's water met every federal standard in 2025, and on several lines it is one of the cleaner rows in the whole report. Thirty coliform samples, zero positives. Lead non-detect across the board, with no single elevated house anywhere in the sample set. PFAS non-detect in UCMR5 testing. We are not going to pretend otherwise in order to sell you something.
If lead was your only worry, Waukee's 2025 results are genuinely reassuring, and that lines up with the housing stock. Lead does not travel from the treatment plant. It comes out of old service lines, old solder and old fixtures inside one specific house. Most of Waukee was plumbed too recently for that to be the usual story. Buying an RO system purely as a lead fix in a 2019 build off Kettlestone would be solving a problem you probably do not have.
The two numbers that actually matter here are the ones new plumbing does not protect you from. Waukee's trihalomethane annual average was 61 against a limit of 80, but the sample range ran up to 92. Trihalomethanes form when chlorine reacts with organic matter in river water, so they are a direct consequence of Waukee drinking treated surface water instead of groundwater. The running annual average is what the standard is measured against, and Waukee stayed compliant on it. Individual samples still crossed 80.
Waukee also ran a free chlorine annual average of 1.00 mg/L in 2025, higher than Urbandale, Clive, Johnston or Ankeny reported in the same report. The limit is 4 mg/L, so that is not a violation and not close to one. It matters for two practical reasons: more chlorine in contact with river organics is the recipe that makes trihalomethanes, and free chlorine is the single biggest reason a glass of tap water smells like a swimming pool.
Waukee is disinfected with free chlorine, not chloramine. Chloramine turns up in some fringe systems around the metro such as Bondurant, Warren and Xenia. The two behave differently in a filter, so it is worth knowing which one is in your line.

The first Stage III ban in the region's history. All residential and commercial lawn watering stopped, Waukee included. Nitrate in the Raccoon River, the river Waukee's plant draws from, hit 14.39 mg/L on the day it was issued and 15.3 mg/L four days later. Restrictions ran into late July.
CIWW Stage III updates ↗It happened again. Central Iowa Water Works issued a second mandatory ban on June 8, stating the system was "operating at the limits of its available treatment resources." The Water Works Park infiltration gallery hit 12.3 mg/L and stayed above 10 for roughly 90 days, a record. Restrictions eased through July 2026.

Cutting outdoor demand across member cities like Waukee gives the nitrate removal system room to keep pace. The McMullen plant that serves Waukee still peaked at 9.04 mg/L in 2025 against a 10 mg/L limit. Iowa has the second-highest cancer incidence rate in the country, and researchers have connected long-term nitrate exposure in drinking water to several of those cancers. Waukee's tap water met the standard both summers. What changed is how little margin was left.
Waukee is one of the fastest-growing cities in Iowa, and that changes the conversation at the kitchen sink.
Waukee went from 23,940 residents at the 2020 Census to 31,823 in the city's 2024 Special Census, with officials projecting roughly 35,000 by 2030. Waukee sits in Dallas County, which the city cites as the fourth fastest growing county in the United States. In 2020 alone Waukee issued a record 1,489 building permits worth $245.7 million.
Kettlestone and the Hickman Road corridor are the shorthand for how much of Waukee got built recently. Practically, that means granite or quartz in the kitchen almost every time. Median age in Waukee is 32.1 and median household income is $94,617, with homeownership around 66.5% on 2023 census estimates and median owner-occupied home value near $350,500. An under-sink RO system is a permanent improvement to the house, which is an easier call when you just moved in and plan to stay a while.
The assumption we run into most in Waukee is that a new house means new water. It does not. The pipes under a 2021 subdivision are new, and that is a real part of why Waukee's lead numbers look the way they do. The water moving through those pipes is the same Raccoon River water Des Moines drinks, treated at the same plant, disinfected the same way, and exposed to the same seasonal nitrate spikes. Modern PEX does not filter anything.
