Your tap water in West Des Moines genuinely depends on which part of the city you live in. Your own utility says so in writing. Here is what that means at your kitchen sink.
Most metro suburbs buy every drop they sell. West Des Moines is the exception: it makes some of its own water and buys the rest.
West Des Moines Water Works (public water supply ID IA7785007, serving 68,723 people) runs its own A.C. Ward Municipal Water Treatment Plant fed by its own wells. It also purchases finished, treated water from Des Moines Water Works. Its 2024 Annual Water Quality Report states plainly that "approximately 25 percent of West Des Moines Water Works customers receive their water solely from DMWW," and its service map puts those customers in the northwest and southeast portions of the city. Everyone else drinks water produced at the A.C. Ward plant, and some addresses get a blend of the two.
Fed by 17 shallow wells only 40 to 50 feet deep in the Raccoon River alluvial aquifer, plus 4 wells drilled about 2,500 feet down into the Jordan Aquifer, part of the deeper Cambrian-Ordovician system. The Iowa DNR rates that shallow alluvial aquifer as highly susceptible to contamination from spills, leaking storage tanks and fertilizer runoff. The Jordan wells are rated low susceptibility.
Treated water pulled from the Raccoon and Des Moines Rivers at the Fleur Drive and L.D. McMullen plants. The McMullen plant specifically serves parts of West Des Moines from radial collector wells sunk in the sand and gravel beneath the Raccoon River. Those river sources are described in the report itself as susceptible to contamination or pollution.
This is the part most West Des Moines homeowners do not know. Two neighbors on opposite sides of town can both be West Des Moines Water Works customers and be drinking water from completely different sources, treated at completely different plants. The 2024 numbers show that difference clearly.

West Des Moines water met every federal standard in 2025. We are not going to pretend otherwise, and the lead and copper results are genuinely good news: not one of the 30 sampled homes came back above the action level, and lead was not detected at the 90th percentile at all.
What is worth understanding is the gap between the two columns. Nitrate in the water West Des Moines makes for itself measured 0.4 mg/L. Nitrate in the water it buys peaked at 9.17 mg/L at Fleur Drive and 9.04 at McMullen, inside a milligram of the 10 mg/L federal ceiling. Same city, same utility, same water bill, and more than twenty times the nitrate depending on which supply reaches your kitchen. That gap is the single most useful thing a West Des Moines homeowner can know about their tap.
A few other things in that report deserve a straight answer. Two routine samples tested positive for total coliform in 2025. No violation was issued, and that is exactly how the monitoring system is supposed to work. On PFAS, West Des Moines returned non-detect across EPA's UCMR5 sampling, as did Des Moines Water Works, so nothing exceeded the federal limits EPA set in 2024. Sodium is not federally regulated, and the treated water leaving the two Des Moines plants measured 53.38 mg/L at Fleur Drive and 28.06 at McMullen, worth knowing if someone in the house is on a sodium-restricted diet.
On hardness: the annual water quality report does not publish a hardness figure, so we are not going to quote one. The plant does soften the water it produces. We do not install softeners and we are not trying to sell you one. An under-sink system treats the water you drink and cook with, not the shower.
West Des Moines Water Works is one of the twelve founding members of Central Iowa Water Works, and it was named in both of the region's emergency nitrate warnings.
The first Stage III ban in the region's history stopped all residential and commercial lawn watering. Nitrate in the Raccoon River, the same river feeding both West Des Moines' shallow wells and the purchased DMWW supply, hit 14.39 mg/L the day it was issued.
CIWW Stage III updates ↗It happened again on June 8, with Central Iowa Water Works stating the regional system was "operating at the limits of its available treatment resources." The Water Works Park infiltration gallery reached 12.3 mg/L and stayed above 10 for roughly 90 days, a record. Restrictions eased for all customers on July 20, 2026.
CIWW Stage III warning ↗It would be easy to read that 0.25 mg/L figure and assume the local wells sit outside the problem. They do not. Seventeen of West Des Moines' twenty-one wells are shallow alluvial wells 40 to 50 feet down in the Raccoon River floodplain, which is precisely why the Iowa DNR rates that aquifer as highly susceptible. And the pressure on the purchased side kept building: in the 2025 regional report the Fleur Drive plant peaked at 9.17 mg/L and the L.D. McMullen plant at 9.04, both higher than the 2024 figures in the table above. Those watering restrictions were never about running out of water. They were about protecting the region's ability to strip nitrate out fast enough to stay under the legal limit. Iowa has the second-highest cancer incidence rate in the country and the fastest growing, and researchers have connected long-term nitrate exposure in drinking water to several of those cancers. Both summers the tap water met the standard. What changed was the margin.
Historic Valley Junction was incorporated in 1893 as a railroad town. The subdivisions out by Jordan Creek Town Center, which opened in August 2004, are more than a century newer. Same city, same utility, wildly different plumbing behind the wall. Under an old Valley Junction sink we take our time. In a 2010s build we are usually in and out in about an hour.
Homeownership in West Des Moines is reported around 57%, noticeably below the roughly two-thirds rate typical across Iowa, which tracks with the large apartment stock near the retail corridors.
